Astrid Brucker } Industry Insider Interview

ASTRID BRUCKER
SS11 PHOTO SHOOT

For our Spring/Summer 2011 photo shoot, J SHOES was thrilled to work with this very talented stylist.  A true industry insider, Astrid Brucker has left her touch on editorials, theater, film and television as well as designing her own apparel and accessories collection.

For the J SHOES photo shoot, Astrid interpreted the vintage crafted quality of the collection and chose ethereal dresses evocative of a Midsummer Night’s Dream to finish the women’s look.  Dark denim and untucked silhouettes were balanced by fedoras, crisp button-downs, and trouser cuts to evoke unstructured elegance and rugged refinement for the men’s collection.

In her interview, Astrid shares her insider knowledge and experience about succeeding in the fashion industry.

When and where did you get your start as a stylist?

I started out with a BFA in Fashion Design from Parsons. I was working in the fashion industry, but had a great desire to do styling, too. So I assisted other stylists working on commercials and magazine editorials.

VERA FARMIGA

What celebrities have you had the opportunity to work with?

Scarlett Johanssen, Vera Farmiga, Lauren Hutton, Eva Mendes, Faye Dunaway, Ally Sheedy, Sam Rockwell, Julian Sands, Ian Somerhalder, and Tim Curry.

Which celebrity do you think has a style that would match great with J SHOES?

Vera Farmiga.

How did you put together the looks for the J SHOES photoshoot.

I [went] to designer showrooms and I incorporate my shopping, which can include sample sales, vintage stores, and flea markets.

When styling for a client, how do you balance between conforming to their expectations and incorporating your styling aesthetic?

I listen to the client and what they want to portray and then coordinate looks according to that style.  I think my aesthetic comes through in the way I use color and add accessories to convey a unique and yet accessible look.

DRESS FROM ASTRIDLAND.COM

You’ve worked on a clothing line, jewelry line, and handbag line in addition to your styling!  How do you find inspiration for these projects?

I started designing clothes at school for other people and started my line when I needed a dress to wear to my movie premiere for Joshua (the 2007 thriller starring Sam Rockwell and Vera Farmiga). I am inspired by NYC, movies and by my travels to Barcelona, Spain, Morocco, and Rome, Italy.

What was your favorite moment in your career as a stylist?

One of my favorite jobs was styling Lauren Hutton for a show called 3 Perfect Days. It was a show about spending 3 days in cities such as Hong Kong or Paris. For Hong Kong Lauren wore Shanghai Tang and for Paris she wore Chanel.

Another all-time favorite styling job was for the Sky Cinema movie channel in Italy where we re-created iconic movie moments.  I did 2 commercials – one here and one in Rome, Italy.

What’s one thing everyone should know about you?

I’m very resourceful and love my work!
